Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment performed in the early stages of periodontal disease. Its main goal is to remove plaque and tartar that have accumulated below the gum line. This procedure can help prevent gum disease from advancing and also prepare gum tissue for further treatments or surgery if needed.

The Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

The first step, scaling, involves using a special tool called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gums. Plaque tends to collect in pockets that form between the teeth and gums, and as periodontal disease worsens, these pockets can deepen, potentially leading to loose teeth or even tooth loss.

Once plaque and tartar are cleared away, the root planing step smooths the surfaces of the tooth roots. This smoothing helps the gums heal and reattach securely to the teeth. Local anesthesia or sedation may be used to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Your dentist might also recommend antibiotics or antimicrobial rinses to prevent infection and help keep bacteria under control.

Most patients experience little or no pain during scaling and root planing, and you can usually return to your normal activities right after treatment. If needed, medication can be prescribed to ease any discomfort you may feel afterward. Following the procedure, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene habits to prevent the gum pockets from returning.
