Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure designed to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, especially in the area of the molars and premolars, to support dental implants. This is achieved by adding bone material between the upper jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are situated on either side of your nose. Sinus lifts are commonly recommended for patients who have lost upper back teeth or experienced bone loss due to gum disease or tooth extraction.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

During the procedure, the surgeon carefully lifts the sinus membrane to create space for the new bone. The bone graft material, which may be sourced from another area of the patient’s body or from a donor, is placed in this space. The process begins with an incision in the gum tissue to expose the jawbone, followed by creating a small opening in the bone to access and elevate the sinus membrane. After placing the graft, the area is sutured closed. Typically, dental implants are placed four to nine months later, once the bone graft has integrated and created a stable foundation.

Recovery From a Sinus Lift

Post-surgery, patients might experience swelling and minor bleeding. It is important to avoid actions such as forceful sneezing or nose-blowing, which can interfere with healing. Stitches are usually removed after seven to ten days, and several follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor healing and ensure proper recovery.

Risks of a Sinus Lift

While sinus lifts are generally safe, there are potential risks associated with the procedure. These include accidental puncture or tear of the sinus membrane, infection, or unsuccessful integration of the bone graft. Such complications are rare and their likelihood can be minimized by choosing an experienced surgeon for your care.
